DeFuniak Springs, Fla. (January 3, 2024) 鈥 A Sunshine Health Community Connection transportation grant removes a barrier for pregnant women in substance misuse treatment. The resource helps ensure they can go to prenatal appointments. The Joanne Birge Women and Children鈥檚 Center at 海角社区 of Walton County is grateful for the grant.
鈥淵ou might think it鈥檚 easy to call for a taxi,鈥 said Tia Guidry, director of 海角社区 of Walton County. 鈥淗owever, mothers in our treatment program don鈥檛 have the resources for that. More importantly, it鈥檚 critical that they make their prenatal appointments while in treatment. This grant removes a transportation barrier to ensure their babies are born healthy.鈥
The JoAnn Birge Women and Children鈥檚 Center is a level II substance abuse treatment facility for pregnant and post-partum women. The goal is to ensure pregnant women remain substance free while receiving appropriate medical care for a healthy birth. Watch a about the center to get a look inside.
Referrals to the center are accepted from all sources, and individuals are welcome to apply. Women meeting the criteria will receive mental health services in a safe environment. Additionally, we make special accommodations for women with children so that they can stay together during mom’s treatment.
