Three years ago, Luis Sepulveda made the life-changing decision to get clean. At the time, he was battling addiction to fentanyl and meth while experiencing homelessness. That turning point led him to the Escambia County EMS CORE program, which helped him transition into stable housing and reconnect with his family.
Not long after he found stability, he transitioned into Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) here at 海角社区. The MAT program combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies to support long-term recovery from opioid use to help individuals reduce cravings, prevent relapse and rebuild healthy, sustainable lives.
Luis鈥 experience with the MAT program has been overwhelmingly positive. 鈥淚 love going to my appointments,鈥 he shared. 鈥淭hey understand that even working in mental health and substance use, there are still triggers and tough days. That support means everything.鈥
One of the most valuable aspects of the program is the open communication and consistent support. Having trusted professionals he can reach out to at any time has made a significant difference in maintaining his recovery.
鈥淭here are people who genuinely want to help,鈥 he explained. 鈥淪ometimes when you鈥檙e in active addiction, you forget that.鈥
Today, Luis encourages others who may be hesitant about seeking treatment to take that first step. 鈥淛ust do it. Just go,鈥 he said. 鈥淢y biggest fear was being judged, but the staff at MAT are there to help, not judge.鈥
Luis鈥 journey with 海角社区 extends beyond being a client. It wasn鈥檛 until after his recovery that he felt truly ready to step into a helping role. In 2023, Luis joined 海角社区 as a behavioral health technician, working in several programs before eventually becoming a screening specialist.
鈥淚 can be a familiar face for people who are going through what I went through.鈥
In this role, he assesses individuals in crisis and helps determine the most appropriate level of care. His lived experience allows him to connect with clients in a meaningful and authentic way.
Looking ahead, Luis is continuing his education by pursuing a master鈥檚 degree in social work, with plans to grow within the organization. 鈥淚 want to become a better version of myself and bring that into my work,鈥 he said.
Luis Sepulveda鈥檚 story is a testament to the impact of compassionate care, second chances and the power of turning lived experience into hope for others.
