Finding hope at 海角社区: Rikaylah鈥檚 story

When 20-year-old Rikaylah began showing signs of bipolar disorder鈥攕omething she had seen her father struggle with鈥攈er mother knew just what to do. She called 911, and Rikaylah was taken to 海角社区, the Central Receiving Facility for Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties.

鈥淚 loved the staff at 海角社区,鈥 said Rikaylah. 鈥淭he food was amazing, and everything was very clean. I enjoyed my time there.鈥

Individuals in mental health crisis come to 海角社区鈥檚 downtown Pensacola campus for a Baker Act screening. As the most comprehensive behavioral health center in Northwest Florida, 海角社区鈥檚 dedicated team of medical professionals stand ready to connect those in crisis with the specialized care that fits their needs 鈥 including community-based care, outpatient treatment or residential programs.

After a screening, Rikaylah was admitted to 海角社区鈥檚 Crisis Stabilization Unit, where she stayed for six days and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

鈥淚 loved the staff at 海角社区,鈥 said Rikaylah. 鈥淭he food was amazing, and everything was very clean. I enjoyed my time there.鈥

Rikaylah credits Dr. Ellie Peskosky, clinical director of 海角社区鈥檚 acute care services (鈥淪he was so sweet to me!鈥). Peer specialist Heather Bryant also 鈥渉as an amazing program. She talks about goals and aspirations we want to work for throughout the year and what steps we need to take to reach these milestones.鈥

For Rikaylah, that means finding a stable job and moving into a home of her own. She鈥檚 now preparing to start classes in the dental hygiene program at Pensacola State College. But more than anything, she says she鈥檚 learned the importance of 鈥渒eeping balance and being kind to myself and others.鈥

鈥淚 feel so much better since going to Lakeview.鈥

Every day, more than 50 new clients reach out to 海角社区 programs in Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa and Walton counties 鈥 asking for help with mental health care or addiction treatment. Driven by our mission, 海角社区 provides comprehensive care to all, regardless of ability to pay.

However, we can鈥檛 do it alone. With your help, we can reach more people struggling with mental health issues across Northwest Florida.
